Job application process
Job application process. Hints and tips.
In this blog,
I will talk about the job application process we go through
and how we can make sure that as candidates we can increase our chances of
being hired.
In a previous blog, I had talked about where to look for in order to find a relevant
to your interests and skills internship/placement or a full-time job. Thus,
all begin by selecting the company and the role you want to apply for and
by clicking the ‘Apply now’ button, once you have checked that you meet the requirements
for that specific role.
The next
step is to make an account (if you visit the company's recruitment web portal for
the first time) and then complete the online application form. That form varies
from companies to companies and different roles. The most basic form will ask
candidates only for a CV/Resume and a Cover letter. However, big organizations
that have a lot of demand, give you a more extensive application form that
requires many details and data from your side (i.e. info on work experience,
high school diploma and subjects, university and your degree, other legal
issues such as the right to work in the country you are applying for, if you
will need visa support, maybe right some mini-essays on specific questions
related to the role you are applying for, etc.). This is the automated step of
the application process as your application will be automatically checked
against the requirements they have set for the 1st stage of the
application process for you to have (i.e. the legal issues, age, relevance of
degree, year of study, if you said you have previous work experience, etc.).
This is a way for the company to save HR resources (staff, time, etc.) from
reviewing every single application.
If you meet
the criteria, you will be invited to take some numerical, verbal, psychometric and/or
situational judgement tests in order for the company to make sure you are the right
employee for the right role.
Here you can test yourself and come back here to tell us about your experience!!! (Try a verbal practice test, Try a logical practice test, Try a numerical practice test)
If you pass
those tests and you meet the standards, you will be invited in an interview and
that can have the following forms: phone or video. The important thing here is to
be fully prepared for the interview regardless of its type. Visit the company’s
website and find out about its culture, its business, the industry, the
responsibilities and tasks of the role you are applying for, etc. Do a web
search and find out about trends, innovations and current affairs of the
company, industry, that are related to your program. Show that you know where
you are applying to with confidence. They want to see you, your skills, your
personality, not someone else.
If you
succeed on that as well, then people from the recruitment team will thorough
review your CV and together with your first interview results they will judge if you
will be invited for an assessment centre which is usually the last step of the
process. In those assessment centres, you go through a face to face interview
with the recruiters, you might take a test relevant to the role you are
applying to and you participate in a group exercise with recruiters watching you
how you collaborate with other team members and analyze some case studies related to your position.
It is a
really time-consuming process but necessary for your future career success, as
good interns typically are offered another placement for next year, something that
can benefit your career and CV. So search, apply, keep calm and impress! It is your career, your future, you make it!
